Volition

Blackened Horde: How did the band get started?

Malice: VOLITION first started in around early summer of 2013. I had a friend ask me if we could jam with this guitarist, and that is where I first met Christian Potter, at the very first jam session the band had.

Blackened Horde: What kind of music do you play?

Malice: We play Thrash Metal, with some hints of Punk and Death Metal.

Christian: We have been labeled as a few things. I would call us blackened thrash.

Blackened Horde: How has the fan response been?

Malice: Its been really extrordinary, we get fan responses from people in places like Europe, South America, Asia, United Kingdom, and so on.

Christian: Our fan response has been awesome. we have gotten a number of chants and fans love to headbang to our music and new listener’s have always loved our sound.

Blackened Horde: Where did the band name come from?

Malice: We originally went under the name EVIL SACRIFICE. However after a few weeks we decided a new name and that is where we started calling ourselves VOLITION, and the name stuck.

Christian: The band name Volition came after the name Evil sacrifice we had when we were a 3 piece with our bass player Dakota west. we just felt the name Volition was a straight forward name that was perfect for us.

Blackened Horde: Introduce the band members and what they do in the band.

Malice: I am the one and only Malice von Creitz and I hit the drums.

Christian: Christian plays guitar and does vocals in the band and Cody plays the drums.

Blackened Horde: Who writes the music? Lyrics?

Malice: Myself and Christian write the music. I write a good portion of the lyrics, however Christian does have a hand in lyrics as well.

Christian: Cody and Christian both write lyrics and music. We jam and come up with new music all the time. sometimes Christian will write some lyrics and Cody attach in his lyrics he has been writing and we combine them.

Blackened Horde: And where do the lyric ideas come from?

Malice: Killing, War, Death, Destruction, Darkness, etc.

Christian: The lyrical theme comes from the concept of war and execution along with lyrics about violence and religious inquisition.

Blackened Horde: What is your view in Satanism and Occultism?

Malice: I see Satanism and Occultism as a weapon of rebellion in metal, for most. A way to incite horror on to regular people. We are not a Satanic band although we had a song called “Satan’s Knight” very early on in the band’s inception. We mostly stick to what we are familar with which is what our lyric ideas i just mentioned in the previous question. However, sometimes i do get ideas from reading H.P. Lovecraft.

Christian: I think it’s still a very interesting concept because religion and spiritual beliefs is one of the most questioned topics.

Blackened Horde: How many albums/CD’s have you released?

Malice: Our first official release was the Vengeful Satisfaction EP, released in January of 2016 (Recorded in Autumn of 2015). We released Crypts of Flesh demo in Febuary of 2017. Visions of the Onslaught will be released in late March/early April of this year.

Christian: We have released 2 of our demos titled “To kill with speed” and “Crypts of flesh” and sold a lot of the cd’s at our shows.

Blackened Horde: Tell me about some the songs on the latest CD?

Malice: Visions of the Onslaught features 9 songs. Half of them are songs we have written in the bands early years, and the other half, in recent years of the group.

Christian: We have written lots of songs over the past 4-5 years but we felt like these songs on our latest CD should be the ones we put on this record.

Blackened Horde: Do you have any side projects?

Malice: I did, it was called TORMENSTORM, however that project is on hold. I have another side project in the works, a Black Metal project which i had originally done back in 2008 and stopped the project in 2010. I decided to reactivate the project last year. I have written new songs and plan on finishing recording sometime this month.

Christian: Christian has a side project band called Unmarked graves which is death/grindcore.

Blackened Horde: Who are some of your musical influences?

Malice: Influences are varied but our main influences are Motorhead, Sodom, and Exodus.

Christian: Motorhead, Exodus, Testament, Voivod, Carcass, Slayer, Sarcofago, Razor, ect

Blackened Horde: Which current bands?

Malice: I really do like the NWOTHM groups like Night Demon, Visigoth, Nosferatu (from South America), Ambush, Ranger, etc. I also like some of the relatively new Thrash Metal groups like Insinnerator, Possessor (from Virginia), Power Trip, Vektor, Immaculate, etc. I really love the sub-genre of Black/Thrash Metal as well.

Blackened Horde: What is the band like when you play live?

Malice: Well we warm up and get prepared usually before go on stage. We wear black clothes, and spiked gauntlets which helps convey the groups image and stage presence. We usually open the show with a theme from lesser-known horror movies like The Fog, or Last House on Dead End Street. We as a group play really well, maybe even faster than on the record.

Christian: Very energetic onstage and we have a great crowd response and people love to bang their heads to our music. we love it.

Blackened Horde: Have you guys ever played in another country?

Malice: We have not played outside of the US. We most certainly like to play in different countries. We hope we can play outside of the United States soon.

Christian: We have not played in another country yet. We hope and plan too! we love playing new places.

Blackened Horde: How big of crowd shows up at shows usually?

Malice: Seeing as we still play mostly local shows at the moment. We play infront a large crowd of loyal fans. We like to stick to all-ages shows for that reason. 21 and up shows are very hit and miss for us because people who go to bars want to hear groups playing cover songs, seeing as Tulsa is a bar-oriented scene.

Christian: Good sized crowds show up at shows. the Tulsa metal scene has a great amount of fans and supporters.

Blackened Horde: How is the crowd response when you play?

Malice: Responses from our audience is great. We usually have moshpits erupt and on “Vengeful Satisfaction” we have a wall of death from the audience when our song hits.

Christian: The crowd response is always great. We always have a great moshpit. people who have seen volition know what to expect and people who have never seen us usually dig us and want to see more of Volition.

Blackened Horde: What do you think of the US Black Metal/Death Metal scene?

Malice: Im not too familar with the current DM scene in the US. United States BM scene is really thriving lately in my opinion. Each scene in parts of the country has their own unique elements to the genre.

Christian: The U.S black metal and death metal scene have an amazing sound. there are lots of new amazing bands that put out some head-stomping metal!

Blackened Horde: What do you think of the Overseas scenes?

Malice: Metal scene in other countries are keeping metal alive and well.

Christian: The overseas scenes are full of amazing bands that work hard and put out some killer material.

Blackened Horde: What are some of new favorite black metal/death metal bands?

Malice: For Black Metal, I really like Obsequiae, Caladan Brood, Frostveil, Pure Wrath, Myrkgrav, to name a few. Once again, im not too familar with newer Death Metal bands, although i really enjoy Gruesome, Gravecreeper, and Skeletal Remains.

Christian: Cadaver Putrefacto, Center of Disease, Planet Namek are some pretty sick bands to check out.

Blackened Horde: When do you guys plan on writing any new material?

Malice: We are always writing new material. However we take time in writing so what we present out to the public its great enough material. Right now we are finishing up on a new song, we are still working on the name of the song.

Christian: We have actually started writing some new material, we think it sounds pretty sick. we are taking our times writing the new music. we want every record we put out to be better than the last.

Blackened Horde: What does the future hold for the band??

Malice: Playing more show in the future, especially out of our state. Like i said we are always writing new music. We always keep our pages on social media updated. So we will keep everyone updated on the group.

Christian: The future holds many things for Volition. we have hope for the future and we plan on playing shows again very soon. we love writing new music and thrashing onstage.
