Pandemmy Review

Pandemmy

Rise Of A New Strike”

2016

Brutal yet systematic, Brazil’s PANDEMMY, are modern mayhem & classic ferocity all rolled up in one big death metal barrage.

Formed in 2009, PANDEMMY aren’t the flavor of the week, these folks have been testing their formula throughout their region for almost 10 years. The band has a number of EP’s under their belt, as well as two full length albums, 2013, “Reflections & Rebellions” & their latest, 2016’s “Rise of a New Strike”.

With a great mix & production, “Rise of a New Strike” starts off with a pretty yet foreboding, prog-esque style intro, then jumps in your face with some pure death metal brutality. The first track, “Circus of Tyrannies” is a powerful modern metal  masterpiece with an old school death metal feel & lyrical content falling in the socio-political realm. I wouldn’t expect any less of a band from the land of Sepultura. This entire album is full of dynamic death metal hooks, grooves, ups & downs with a healthy dose of thrash metal, as well as a bit of technical death & prog metal elements too.

I pick up a number of possible influences  from Hypocrisy & Kreator to Carcass & of course, the pre Arise era of Sepultura when listening to this album.

I can’t say enough good things about this brutal offering, so I’ll get to the meat of things & mention a few stand out pieces.

“State of War” is an intense piece with a lengthy, but tasteful, mid section of guitar solos & extended rythmatic leads. For some reason, once again, I got a Kreator feel from this piece, maybe it’s the main riff that brings them to mind? Anyhow, the riff really makes you want to throw molotovs & join the revolution.

The next piece I really took to, was “Almost Dead”. This tunes has a very classic death metal vibe. Though it wanders here & there, it still keeps you encompassed with it’s bit of chaos.

Last but not least, is the track “No Reasons for Losses”. With it’s classical yet foreboding intro & the melodic death metal barrage that follows, this tune brought to mind the better parts of say bands like Dark Tranquility or even the majesty of Carcass. It’s a good example that shows they are a little more than just a death metal band.

With all that said, I thought PANDEMMY brought it with this record. it’s interesting, dynamic, old, new & most importantly, good.
