Summon: How did the band get started?
Band: The band started as a one-man project in 2005. Since then, it has gone through various transformations and experiments. An important date in the band’s history was 2011, when the debut Path was released. The album was followed by the Plus Ultra EP in 2012. In 2013, two new band members became part of 0N0. With this new line up the band released a single and lyric video A Farewell to Conscious Shores and played its first live performances. The latest record Reconstruction and Synthesis was released on the Spring equinox 2016.
Summon: What kind of music do you play?
Band: 0N0’s music can be described as experimental, industrial extreme metal. The production is a mixture of various genres like Doom Metal, Death Metal, Post Metal, Ambient, Industrial. Nowadays we label it as Psychedelic Industrial Doom Death Metal. 0N0’s songs are usually long and dense. The sound is based on heavy, down-tuned, dissonant riffs mixed with industrial samples and ambience. Slow tortured parts are opposed by blast-beats and outbursts of insanity or lengthy sections of consuming psychedelia.
Summon: Where did the band name come from?
Band: The name means “it” in Slovak language. It represents the idea of neutrality and annihilation of duality. It is written as zero N zero (i.e. 0110, a binary code) and graphically expresses the industrial nature of the band’s music.
Summon: Introduce the band members and what they do in the band.
Band: 0N0 was conceived by T. who is responsible for guitars, vocals and programming. Lead vocals are executed by S. The remaining member is A. who takes care of the guitar and vocal duties.
Summon: Who writes the music? Lyrics?
Band: Most of the music and lyrics have always been written by T. With the addition of new members, the band’s vision has been enriched by two other points of view. Both A. and S. contribute to the creative process with their ideas and opinions and at the same time enable the band to perform its aural message live.
Summon: And where do the lyric ideas come from?
Band: The ideas come from various sources. Basically, the lyrical themes are based on our life experiences, but we focus mostly on the subconscious and dream-like perception of reality. The lyrics may be defined as introspective, surrealistic and unclear. We usually don’t explain them in depth as some artists tend to do. We want the listener to interpret the music and ideas through his own perceptive filters. All we are willing to expose is that the integral idea of the album is that of the reintegration of human individuality. The album’s title is a paraphrase of the alchemical motto “Solve et Coagula”. Reconstruction is the dissolution of human ego and being and synthesis its restoration. The interplay of these processes enables the penetration of essence.
Summon: How many albums/CD’s have you released?
Band: We have released two albums and one EP. All of these recordings are available through our bandcamp page in digital form and the latest record as a CD. Both the debut and EP CD’s were extremely limited and are gone. The Reconstruction and Synthesis CD’s are limited as well, but we still have enough of those.
Summon: Tell me about some of the songs on the latest CD?
Band: The songs are both slow and fast, aggressive and melancholic, sludgy and soaring, hypnotic and chaotic, they’re disharmonic and melodic at the same time. As it was mentioned before, they are usually lengthy compositions from six to twelve minutes. The songs are thick with darkness and phantasmagoria and as some say, post-apocalyptic atmosphere and lunacy.
Summon: Do you have any side projects?
Band: Each member of 0N0 pursues several musical endeavors. S. is currently grooming his acoustic solo project and utilizes his vocal and bass playing skills in several bands. A. is an active member of the local industrial and noise scene and plays traditional Balinese gamelan music. T. immerses himself in various forms of extreme metal.
Summon: Who are some of your musical influences?
Band: There are too many to mention. We are into all kinds of extreme metal, but at the same time we are influenced by lots of other genres outside the metal scene. Besides, we are influenced by other art categories as well, mostly literature and visual art.
Summon: What is the band like when you play live?
Band: Our present performances contain five songs of the latest record and one old track. We are a three-piece band with two guitars, lead vocal and two backing vocals. The rest of the music is sampled. Regarding the possibilities of such a line-up, we try to present the material as close as possible to the recordings, considering the multi-layered nature of 0N0’s music. At the same time, there is certain space for variation and improvisation throughout the entire set.
Summon: When do you guys plan on writing any new material?
Band: A decent amount has already been created. Actually, we’ve got new music composed for another EP and a considerable portion of material written for the next album. Both are in the form of pre-production.
Summon: What does the future hold for the band??
Band: We would like to release the aforementioned EP the following year. In the meantime, we would like to play some live shows to present the actual material and slowly include new tracks into our live set. The next step shall be the recording of Reconstruction and Synthesis’ follow up.
