Summon: How did the band get started?
Frater Epitheton: I formed Nagelsturm in 2006 together with Terror (Bass) Krieg (Drums) and Fäulnis (Guitar). Soon after that we kicked out Terror because he was a low- life existence that can´t fit in the Conception we had in mind for this group.
Summon: What kind of music do you play?
Frater Epitheton: Black Metal based on Destruction and the Left Hand Path.
Plage: Simply Black Metal…
Summon: How has the fan response been?
Frater Epitheton: We had always polarized since the project started. In fact I would say there is a small base of Fans next to the Project. Society would name them broken individuals I guess, but this is exactly the crowd I wanted to reach and count myself into. Pure Scum Black Metal.
Plage: As far as I know we don´t have any Fans. Except Phrases like „ I will kill you if you cross my face “ or: „ Your Music really sucks“ means that the like us…
Summon: Where did the band name come from?
Frater Epitheton: I deceided to use this name back in 2006 because of its harsh pronouncation and it´s postmodern approach. Translated into English it would mean something like “Nailstorm/Storm of Nails”.
Summon: Introduce the band members and what they do in the band.
Frater Epitheton: I am the only Member that´s left from the original Lineup that is left. Plage joined on Bass in 2008. My part in this project were always the Vocals, writing our Lyrics and give the group a strong personal rooted direction, especially if it comes to orthodox ideologies.
Plage: The musicians as Individuals are rather unimportend, because they would take too much attention and stop listeners from focussing on the music. We are „Frater Epitheton“(Lyrics/Vocals) and „Die Plage“( Guitar/Bass)Everything else does not matter…. The Music shall talk for us!
Summon: Who writes the music? Lyrics?
Frater Epitheton: Since we had become active again in 2011 Plage writes all music. The lyrical conception remains my buisness.
Summon: And where do the lyric ideas come from?
Frater Epitheton: From my sick fucking mind. I was always obsessed by themes such as Misanthropy, Philosophy (especially F. Nietzsche) and similiar sources of morbidity. I put very much of my personal life in my lyrics, mostly they deal with self- destruction, insanity, abuse and of course my expieriences that I had made within the Left Hand Path.
Summon: What is your view in Satanism and Occultism?
Frater Epitheton: I am strongly rooted in this path for years now. Working with Qliphotic Currents, Mantraism, Meditations, Blood Rituals and other ways to achieve Gnosis within the acausal Forces. Nagelsturm were founded by me, so we were always rooted in orthodox satanic ideologies. At this place I want to make clear that these whole “modern Satanists” and the Church of Satan are not even worth to laugh about if it comes to the occult traditional believes. I strictly seperate myself from such Scum and their “psychologic archetypes” they connect within the name Satan.
Summon: How many albums/CD’s have you released?
Frater Epitheton: Our first Demo “Hymnen aus Hass” came in 2007 limited to 50 copies. 2008 we rehersed to Split with The unspeakable Cult ov Goatpenis, but unfortunately it was never realised. The Songs were released as “Rehersal 2008” in very few copies that were given to close friends of us. Soon after that we lost our rehearsing room and Krieg had to leave Saarland for personal Issues, so we deceided to end Nagelsturm. In 2011 the fire was burning again in my veins so I contacted Plage and Fäulnis to re- record something from “Rehersal 2008” for the “Saarrevier” tape-compilation that appeared on Runenstein Records.
Summon: Tell me about some the songs on the latest CD?
Plage: “Titan” is not finished yet so there is not much to talk about now. We appeared on the “Saarrevier” Compilation after our re- animation of Nagelsturm in 2011and re- recorded the Song “Aufstand” for it. This Song was a door opening point for us as we wrote it 2008. The first time eryone felt that all musicians were in a state where we absolutely harmonized with eachother. After we re- recorded “Aufstand” we felt that the fire in our chests was still burning and we had to reform Nagelsturm to finish the full- length that was planed since 4 years. I and Frater Epitheton deceided that this will be the first and the last Nagelsturm Album, honouring all the years we had given to the music. Both of us will continue to make music together after that, but with a different name. Take care of our follow up conspiracy “Vergiftet”!
Summon: Do you have any side projects?
Frater Epitheton: Yes I have. There are: Vermin.d (Solo project, Dark Ambient), NeonAcidNightmare (Solo, weird electric sounds), Tribes of Anakim (Together with Ahrin von Past from Italy, Ritual Ambient), Khaomega (with Mondleid, Harmonic Black Metal) A divided Soul has more than one face to present.
Plage: I am planing a one man project right now: Grabestau. Except that I am playing Guitar in “Thodtgehoelz”, a German death metal band, and do a session member in the black metal project “Old Pagan” for one year.
Summon: Who are some of your musical influences?
Plage: I can only try to explain my musical influences. Everytime I start writing on Songs it is like something shoots through my Head and the rest of it writes itself. Only a thing of Emotions. That´s why it´s hard for me to answer that question. At the moment I have my focus again on some progressive Death and Black Metal. But if and how much influence can be heard for the comming release I cannot say yet.. I wrote on the Material for over one year now and at some parts I´m still working on it, so there is nothing I can say about the final songs. I have to surprise myself with it…
Summon: Which current bands?
Frater Epitheton: Totenmond, Skitliv, Mysticum and Nattefrost to name a few artist I respect for the intensity of their art.
Plage: At the moment stuff like Urfaust, Enslaved or Ihsan. Bands like Sodom or Exodus are rotating every time by me.
Summon: What is the band like when you play live?
Frater Epitheton: As we started Nagelsturm 2006 Krieg and I deiceided to do no live concerts ever. Krieg left in 2008, but I’ll never break this arrangement.
Summon: What do you think of the US Black Metal/Death Metal scene?
Frater Epitheton: Xasthur, Judas Iscariot and Black Funeral are great sounds from the US. Leviathan too. There´s nothing more I could say about it because I don´t know much about it.
Plage: I don´t care, Scenes seem to create even more Scum than ever. This whole shepherd like thinking, also the “we are so true“ statements piss me off! I don´t want to be counted to this “individual collective”. People seem to forgett that it´s all about the music, the music we feel and we let it everyday roll over us like a fucking tank. Today they all want to be so Oldschool… I want to have nothing to do with that.
Summon: What do you think of the Overseas scenes?
Plage: Same answer like the last question.
Summon: What are some of new favorite black metal/death metal bands?
Frater Epitheton: Newer bands that I enjoy a lot are for example Urfaust, Dragged into Sunlight, Sektemtum and Sorcier des Glaces.
Plage: The most music that is produced at the moment it sounds too overproduced and sterile to me. That´s why I don´t have an Eye on this developements.
Summon: When do you guys plan on writing any new material?
Frater Epitheton: As mentioned before we will work under the name Vergiftet after “Titan” is finished. “Titan” is in the working progress.
Plage: First I will finish the work for THIS album before I can have anything else on my mind.
Summon: What does the future hold for the band??
Plage: For the Nagelsturm material I will do my best that it can represent the former core of this project. (Except Fäulnis, he really sucked). Nagelsturm ´s core were Frater Epitheton, Krieg and myself, Die Plage. Krieg had to leave us for personal reasons, but he is also a part of Nagelsturm and that will never change. I hope the Material for Titan will fit his expectations, as well as with both of us!!
Frater Epitheton: Hopefully the sick piece of Noise that I wanted to record the last 7 years now.
