Mortal Coil

Blackened Horde: How did the band get started?
Boris: Mortal Coil was founded a long time ago, in mid ’90 when a bunch of teenagers decided to form a band and play music that they enjoyed. In 1999 band ceased to exist, life just took us separate ways, and now almost 22 years later, we gathered again, with three original members.

Blackened Horde: What kind of music do you play?
Boris: We mostly play trash / death with some melodic death influence.

Blackened Horde: How has the fan response been?
Boris: Our old fans are delighted that the band resurrected, and believe it or not, some of them claim that they still remember our songs that we used to perform in the ’90s.

Blackened Horde: Where did the band name come from?
Boris: The Band name is actually our tribute to Carcass. They had a song “This Mortal Coil” on their Heartwork album, which we still think it is one of the best metal albums ever made, and we decided to call ourselves – Mortal Coil.

Blackened Horde: Introduce the band members and what they do in the band.
Dario Rudic: Lead guitar / bass guitar

Andrija Rogic: Rhythm guitar

Rino Rudic: Drums

Boris Cadez: Vocals.

*Our dear friend Tomislav Jerak is currently our bass guitar assistant but we are searching for a permanent solution.*

Blackened Horde: How many albums/CD’s have you released?
Boris: We did not publish any CD’s yet, currently we have three (demo) songs on YT, but have material for one full album. How and when it will be published, remains to be seen.

Blackened Horde: Tell me about some of the songs on the latest CD?
Boris: As I said, three songs are available on YT, “Eyeless sight”, “Black crow/Black heart” and “Insane”, number four “When darkest skies” should be available on YT at the beginning of April.

Blackened Horde: Who writes the music? Lyrics?
Boris: Dario is mostly in charge of music, although we all contribute to that with advice, and lyrics are written by Me (Boris).

Blackened Horde: And where do the lyric ideas come from?
Boris: We made about 13-14 our songs at that time, only cover we used to play was Sepultura’s “Refuse-Resist”. Our lyrics were all about “problems” teenager used to have at that time in Croatia, and that was love and war, which ended in Croatia in 1995.

Blackened Horde: Do you have any side projects?
Boris: Mostly not, only Dario also plays guitar in a band named Inceptor, also from Zadar, Croatia.

Blackened Horde: Who are some of your musical influences?
Boris: We grew up on ’90’s metal, so Carcass, Amorphis, Edge of Sanity, Cemetary, Entombed, Pantera, Sepultura, Solitude Aeturnus, Anathema, Tiamat and Therion are the bands we listen the most but of course, we also were influenced by Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Metallica and Slayer.

Blackened Horde: What is the band like when you play live?
Boris: We performed live long time ago, but we still remember that feeling you can only experience when you climb on that stage. At the moment we are recording and practicing our old songs and I guess the time we will climb on stage in our home city again, is not far away.

Blackened Horde: Have you guys ever played in another country?
Boris: No, we never played outside Croatia.

Blackened Horde: How big of a crowd do you normally get?
Boris: The biggest crowd we performed was approx 2000 people, but mostly we performed in old bunkers, with 200 -300 people max, and we used to feel great playing for such a small crowd. Interaction with our fans was very important to us, and literally we could shake hands with every one of them after the gig.

Blackened Horde: How is the crowd response when you play?
Boris: We always had a positive reaction whenever we played live.

Blackened Horde: What do you think about the underground scene?
Boris: These days, with great availability of material on the net, I am surprised how many metal bands exist all over the world, and honestly, surprised with how good many of those bands are.

Blackened Horde: What are some of your new favorite Extreme metal bands?
Boris: I don’t know how new or how extreme they are, but I discovered LORD OF THE LOST recently and was very impressed. It is a German band from Hamburg.

Blackened Horde: Since the Covid Pandemic has that hurt the band in making music at all?
Boris: No, I don’t think so, we even got some extra time to record and practice in peace.

Blackened Horde: What advice would you as a musician give to a fellow musician just starting out?
Boris: Just to play for fun, enjoy what you are doing, enjoy the music, do not bother listening to others saying you are not good enough. Once you stop enjoying what you do, it is probably time to stop doing it.

Blackened Horde: When do you guys plan on writing any new material?
Boris: The plan is first to record all our old stuff, and once we release that, we will proceed to the new songs. We already have two new songs, but that will have to wait for the moment. We do not want to mix old and new songs.

Blackened Horde: What does the future hold for the band??
Boris: As I said, first we will release all our ’90’s songs, as a demo, then hopefully we will record them all in the studio, and after that we will publish the new songs.
We are currently satisfied with our rehearsals, we enjoy our meetings, and we are having fun and having a great time together. I hope it will stay like that, no matter what the future brings.
