Summon: How did the band get started?
Kevin: The band was started by Kevin Dystopian in 2012 after I decided I wanted to focus on my own project, where all instruments, programming and otherwise were done by myself, this resulted in a demo being released in 2013 called “Armageddon” to a decent reaction before I started work on the debut album which is due to be release in May 2014.
Summon: What kind of music do you play?
Kevin: Dystopian plays Grindcore with influences from Pig Destroyer and Brutal Truth to Early Carcass and Napalm Death as well as Thrash and Death Metal.
Summon: How has the fan response been?
Kevin: Fan response has been pretty good with a rise in interest this year.
Summon: Where did the band name come from?
Kevin: The band name was thought of randomly as it began as a bit of a negative project with Dystopia being a land of negativity and unpleasantness so I felt the name Dystopian fit quite well.
Summon: Introduce the band members and what they do in the band.
Kevin: Dystopian is a one piece project with Kevin Dystopian doing all vocals, guitars, bass and drum programming as well as all the production for the 2013 demo and 2014 album.
Summon: Who writes the music? Lyrics?
Kevin: All music and lyrics by Kevin Dystopian.
Summon: And where do the lyric ideas come from?
Kevin: Lyric ideas come from anywhere from Horror movies to my own twisted mind, coming up with gory subjects and subjects of taboo.
Summon: What is your view in Satanism and Occultism?
Kevin: I believe everyone has their own beliefs and faith, I quite enjoy reading up on Satanism and Occultism myself at times and feel it adds to my whole world perception.
Summon: How many albums/CD’s have you released?
Kevin: 2, the 2013 demo and the upcoming 2014 Debut album “End of Days”.
Summon: Tell me about some the songs on the latest CD?
Kevin: Some songs on the upcoming CD include Extremist Extremities about these extremists on both sides either religious or otherwise who decided to take things to the next level of idiocy by blowing people up, killing for some purpose that doesn’t even make sense. Then I have a few fun tracks such as Choke Me which is about Erotic Asphyxiation and Book of the Dead about the cult classic horror film “Evil Dead” so the new album has a bit of everything.
Summon: Do you have any side projects?
Kevin: Dystopian is my main project.
Summon: Who are some of your musical influences?
Kevin: Some of my musical influences include Pig Destroyer, Carcass, Brutal Truth, Cattle Decapitation and Napalm Death.
Summon: Which current bands?
Kevin: Pig Destroyer, Carcass, Brutal Truth, Cattle Decapitation and Napalm Death.
Summon: What is the band like when you play live?
Kevin: Dystopian performs as a one piece band with myself playing live guitar and vocals with a drum machine and samples playing along.
Summon: Have you guys ever played in another country?
Kevin: Not quite yet, only in Australia but I look to tour other countries soon.
Summon: How big of crowd shows up at shows usually?
Kevin: Crowds are very unpredictable in Australia, sometimes you’ll have a great turnout where everyone is rowdy and ready to mosh and other nights it is a little underwhelming.
Summon: How is the crowd response when you play?
Kevin: First proper shows are coming up in a few weeks so I am interested to see how they react.
Summon: What do you think of the US Black Metal/Death Metal scene?
Kevin: US Death Metal is amazing, I get quite a bit of influence from some of those guys as they are so damn good, I haven’t heard much US Black Metal though, but if someone were to show me some I’d be keen to hear it.
Summon: What do you think of the Overseas scenes?
Kevin: I’d love to take it on and play in the overseas scenes as I wish to travel the world with Dystopian.
Summon: What are some of new favorite black metal/death metal bands?
Kevin: New Favorite black metal bands include Lantlos, Behemoth’s new album is great. new Death metal bands I enjoy are Disentomb, the newest Pig Destroyer album and Cattle Decapitations newest.
Summon: When do you guys plan on writing any new material?
Kevin: Once this new album is out I’ll start writing new material.
Summon: What does the future hold for the band??
Kevin: I plan on continuing with touring Australia and taking any overseas gigs I may be offered in the future as I plan on touring a lot with Dystopian and getting the music out to the whole world.
