“Afterlife in Darkness”

The band may be called Depressed but don’t let that fool you, this band is strong, mighty and above it all, very angry. I never heard of them before, but their blend of death metal hit me hard, very hard. Their riffing is fast and complex, drums are relentless and the vocals are rough and brutal with only a reasonable level of gutturals for good measure without sounding like a grunting pig. Their riffing is rather unique in the sense that there isn’t overly complicated riffing all the time, and sometimes you can even appreciate the tone of the instruments they used. What’s also impressive it that this band hunked out twelve tracks which are all unique in their way.
The album is not only musically skilled but sounds good. It’s crisp and nothing is out of place, not even the multi-layered vocals. The guitars tone is fat but not muddy and the drums are tight and punchy but still feel that an actual drummer is hitting them.
The artwork is intricate without an overkill factor in it. It deviates from the skull guts and gore album covers. And personally I really like it, one of the best designs I’ve seen for a while. Even the Logo’s and album title are well balance on the ‘palette’.
Will I listen to it again? I would certainly listen to the track I liked the most but not the whole album at end. The tracks might have 12 unique tracks but I’m sure only die-hard fans of the genre can handle that extremity for a long while. Still, I listened to all of it and wasn’t disappointed with what I’ve heard. The band is soon closing down its second decade and being able to summon an album like this is truly respectable.
