Blackened Horde: How did the band get started?
Luke: I was working in a Death Metal project with other musicians looking for a Singer, Giuseppe already helped me with some bass lines and he tried vocals too, it was great! As his contribution was also relevant creatively so we decide to keep only some ideas and restart this experience in Death Metal.
Blackened Horde: What kind of music do you play?
Luke: We play mainly Death Metal.
Blackened Horde: How has the fan response been?
Luke: The 1st EP was a great surprise for us because Defechate starts to exist with its own soul. We don’t have too definite coordinates and basically we do what we like, but the public seems to like it!
Blackened Horde: Where did the band name come from?
Luke: Isn’t only a word pun between defecate and hate; it’s also the original name of the project I gave many years ago while playing in other bands, that was what the others could not digest, what they expelled with rejection.
Blackened Horde: Introduce the band members and what they do in the band.
Luke: I play mainly guitars, sometimes synth and drums; Giuseppe is the Voice and the Bass; we both compose the songs, there are some other musicians helping us on Defechate but they are not officially part of it.
Blackened Horde: How many albums/CD’s have you released?
Luke: We released one EP at the beginning of 2020 “Overthrown into Oblivion” then we release a digital single “Oxydized Man” during the covid19 pandemic. Our debut album will be out at the beginning of 2022 via Great Dane Records.
Blackened Horde: Tell me about some of the songs on the latest CD?
Luke: The Album will consist of 10 songs, one will be the reissue of the digital single (remastered) titled “Oxydized Man”. The only one that we can anticipate is “Burning Like The Water” (https://greatdanerecords.bandcamp.com/album/burning-like-the-water) that speaks about domestic violence and blasphemy.
Blackened Horde: Who writes the music? Lyrics?
Luke: Generally the main theme/riffing start with me, but Giuseppe has always been his crucial contribution. Lyrics are written by both me and Giuseppe.
Blackened Horde: And where do the lyric ideas come from?
Luke: There’s no rule about this, it generally deal with explicit topics providing our insight.
Blackened Horde: What is your view in Satanism and Occultism? (If this applies)
Luke: We don’t follow religion or cult; personally I like to read esoteric and paranormal phenomena.
Blackened Horde: Do you have any side projects?
Luke: We are both involved in other projects, In this moment I’m resuming with Humangled, Death Metal, and Giuseppe is also in Zora, Glacial Fear, Antipathic and some others death metal stuff.
Blackened Horde: Who are some of your musical influences?
Luke: We like many kind of music and genres, surely Defechate keeps many influences, none consciously decided .. everyone can identify something.
Blackened Horde: Have you guys ever played in another country?
Luke: We both had live experiences both in Italy and abroad, but with our other projects, me 5/6 gigs in Eastern Europe with Humangled, and Giuseppe in Russia and Albania. it’s always a nice experience to play outside the house.
Blackened Horde: How big of a crowd do you normally get?
Luke: Here in Italy audiences not too crowded even if burning hot, unless supporting/opening stage in big crowded audiences.
Blackened Horde: How is the crowd response when you play?
Luke: Beyond us specifically, in general when playing live everything depends on the evening, on the organization, Death Metal has no “standard” on the Italian underground.
Blackened Horde: What do you think about the underground scene?
Luke: In Italy there’s no real underground scene, I can answer with Edge of Sanity’s song “The Bleakness of it all”.
Blackened Horde: What are some of your new favorite black metal/death metal bands?
Luke: New favorite is not simple! I can’t mention Gatecreeper from Arizona (US) they are newcomers?!
Blackened Horde: Since the Covid Pandemic has that hurt the band in making music at all?
Luke: For sure! No rehearsal room, no live stages… we risked oxidizing over time!
Blackened Horde: What advice would you as a musician give to a fellow musician just starting out?
Luke: Follow your instincts, express yourself and first of all do it for yourself.
Blackened Horde: When do you guys plan on writing any new material?
Luke: We are closing now debut album.. we want to close it in the best way!
Blackened Horde: What does the future hold for the band??
Luke: We do not set limits, we will always follow our instincts.
