Blackened Horde: How did the band get started?
Cody: I started playing in 1999 with another person as “The Abhorrer”, kind of Niden Div. 187 meets Manes…and then the other person went away, just as well, and myself, I became Cryostasium in 2002.
Blackened Horde: What kind of music do you play?
Cody: I call it dark ambient metal. I come from a big metal background so I write from a metal point of view, but I also love ambient music in general, especially when it’s dark, so that just bleeds into the music, unescapably.
Blackened Horde: How has the fan response been?
Cody: Cryostasium. Not selling one single release or getting positive comments since 2014.
Blackened Horde: Where did the band name come from?
Cody: I actually made it up. I had this weird vision of these people in this frozen museum of “souls” I suppose frozen at time of death. Detailed descriptions on the plaques too. Pretty creepy. But I like it.
Blackened Horde: Introduce the band members and what they do in the band.
Cody: Me. All of it.
Blackened Horde: Who writes the music? Lyrics?
Cody: See above answer.
Blackened Horde: And where do the lyric ideas come from?
Cody: Wow…I’d say life in general as I feel or as how I would like to feel in this life.
Blackened Horde: What is your view in Satanism and Occultism?
Cody: I know a lot, I have so much respect for this stuff but I have no personal opinion on it.
Blackened Horde: How many albums/CD’s have you released? Tell me about some the songs on the latest CD?
Cody: Well, the songs on “Project:00” are new….new for me….the guitars are like the same as I always do, that fuzzed out, druggy heaviness…..the drums and bass are more rooted in industrial music, the kit I use is MUCH better than kits I’ve used for YEARS…I have a “female vocalist” haha. I use the program Vocaloid on this release, and I used the voice “Meiko”. For a program it sounds not bad at all, and it seemed to fit this particular feel.
Blackened Horde: Do you have any side projects?
Cody: I’ve taken part in so many bands over the years….Witch Tomb, Bone Ritual, Psycho, Gonkulator, Goat Felch, Cythraul, and CTM, which I did with my brother…..as of now though, only Cryostasium.
Blackened Horde: Who are some of your musical influences?
Cody: Definitely off the bat bands like Manes, Thorns, Strid, Shining, Bethlehem, Ved Buens Ende, Virus, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Mysticum, (old) Dark Funeral, Dodheimsgard, (old) Emperor, Von, Black Witchery.
Blackened Horde: Which current bands?
Cody: None. I haven’t heard anything interesting metal-wise in a long time. I kinda hate that cause I wish it were like before…bands bands bands and they were all good too.
Blackened Horde: What is the band like when you play live?
Cody: It’s myself. On stage, With a bass, with or without projections….and backing tracks. It’s a lot of fun. Especially to watch. No. Not really. But if you enjoy hearing awesome music loud and live, come check me out.
Blackened Horde: Have you guys ever played in another country?
Cody: No….unfortunately….
Blackened Horde: How big of crowd shows up at shows usually?
Cody: I’m lucky if one of my friends shows up.
Blackened Horde: How is the crowd response when you play?
Cody: Polite clapping.
Blackened Horde: What do you think of the US Black Metal/Death Metal scene?
Cody: It used to be awesome and now I have noooooo clue. Really. I heard a few bands but nothing really catches my ears like those old bands.
Blackened Horde: What do you think of the Overseas scenes?
Cody: Doing a lot better than us I suppose. A lot of people are. Europe seems to be thriving on metal, still, whereas the US seems not to give a shit. Except for shitty bands….and bands with names like Taco Cat. What the fuck.
Blackened Horde: What are some of new favorite black metal/death metal bands?
Cody: You know, I used to get into new metal bands via compilations. I haven’t heard anything I can remember, so maybe it’s time for a compilation hunt. Like 1991.
Blackened Horde: When do you guys plan on writing any new material?
Cody: Taking a little break right now. actually…..I’ve put out so many records and so much material that I just feel it’s time to break from writing for a while. I’m still definitely playing shows and promoting my new record, “Project:00”.
Blackened Horde: What does the future hold for the band??
Cody: We’ll see.
