FUMIGATION “Your Death Metal Pest Control Specialists” from Ottawa, ON, Canada. Signed to CDN Records.
Blackened Horde: How did the band get started?
Chris: Back in 2008 I had a few songs I wrote I was pretty happy with, so I made a post online looking for members, found people, and off we went!
Blackened Horde: What kind of music do you play?
Chris: Pest control themed death metal, kinda old school, kinda new, kinda brutal, lots of groove, very riff-heavy.
Blackened Horde: How has the fan response been?
Chris: Pretty good for live shows, we’re usually one of, if not the heaviest band on every bill.
Blackened Horde: Where did the band name come from?
Chris: Shortly after I started my pest control career I was hanging out with a buddy (who would become one of our OG guitarist and is currently with the band for a 2nd run) and we were joking that it would be hilarious to start a band revolving around pest control. He also suggested the name Fumigation… a few weeks later I had some songs written.
Blackened Horde: Introduce the band members and what they do in the band.
Band: Currently the main lineup, from our last show anyways, is Vitto (guitar), Chris (bass), Dan (vox), Mat (drums).
Blackened Horde: How many albums/CD’s have you released?
Chris: FUMIGATION released a promo in 2009, the full length CD “Integrated Pest Management” in 2013 (CDN Records), the “Invasion” Split CD in 2017 (CDN Records), the “r0 5.7” EP in 2020 (S/R), full length “Structural Extermination” in 2022 (CDN Records), and 10 year old previously unreleased “The Lost EP” (S/R) also in 2022.
Blackened Horde: Tell me about some of the songs on the latest CD?
Chris: The Barren Hive is a follow up to a track called Evacuating the Hive from our 1st full length… basically in the 1st song the hive was under attack and in the 2nd song the hive has been destroyed and all the wasps are dead.
Blackened Horde: Who writes the music? Lyrics?
Chris: I write all the music and most lyrics, but I’ve been trying to step back from lyrics a bit.
Blackened Horde: And where do the lyric ideas come from?
Chris: My job as an exterminator, and pest control in general… plus random jokes and stories.
Blackened Horde: Do you have any side projects?
Chris: Currently no, but I did session bass for the last Spilling Entrials album.
Blackened Horde: Who are some of your musical influences?
Chris: Ohhh Cephalic Carnage, Crowbar, Spawn of Possession, Immolation…stuff like that.
Blackened Horde: What is the band like when you play live?
Chris: Heavy AF.
Blackened Horde: Have you guys ever played in another country?
Chris: No, unfortunately… one day perhaps. NY promoters get at us!
Blackened Horde: How big of a crowd do you normally get?
Chris: We’ve played to crowds of anywhere from 10 to 200 people I guess… pretty standard for a local band that doesn’t do real touring.
Blackened Horde: How is the crowd response when you play?
Chris: Hands crossed, no movement, followed by polite clapping.
Blackened Horde: What do you think about the underground scene?
Chris: Well its coming back finally now that Covid restrictions have loosened. Still early to really give a state of the union on the scene but its back, and that’s the important thing.
Blackened Horde: What are some of your new favorite Extreme metal bands?
Chris: Wormed, Severed Savior, Cephalic Carnage, Immolation, Visceral Disgorge.
Blackened Horde: Since the Covid Pandemic has that hurt the band in making music at all?
Chris: Yeah we were suppose to release a full length in 2020 but instead we just did an EP with half the band, and released it as a digital only download. 2 years later we finally released the full length Structural Extermination.
Blackened Horde: What advice would you as a musician give to a fellow musician just starting out?
Chris: Do it for the passion, because you won’t make any money… and frankly it’ll help if you can afford to lose money at it as well.
Blackened Horde: When do you guys plan on writing any new material?
Chris: I’m always dabbling here and there but no concrete plans on a follow up yet.
Blackened Horde: What does the future hold for the band??
Chris: For now we’re going to play some shows here and there, and eventually write/record again.
